Here are four ways to better know and understand the culture of your church:

1. Decision Making: Examine the ways and processes by which decisions are made in your church. Formally? Informally? Relationally? Authoritatively? Democratically?

2. Social Patterns: Examine the ways people relate to each other, and the way your system embraces new relationships. What are the social patterns that exist between the people? How does your environment handle relational conflict and tension?

3. Priorities: Examine the areas of ministry that are consistently emphasized, regardless of need or external conditions. What gets the attention? Why? What is driving that kind of focus?

4. Leadership Influences: Examine the key relationships with the leader. What are the major influences on you as the pastor? Who do you turn to? Why? Who always seems to seek you out? Historically, who have been the gatekeepers and opinion setters of the church?
