Being in a theatre production in 2001 was a prescription for my boredom and loneliness as a housewife in the endless rows of Singapore high-rise apartments. I desperately needed to get out of the house and make more crazy and artistic friends!
Today, I get together weekly with a group of young, Singaporean Christian women I’d met in theatre. I had acted with or directed all of them in the previous year. We call ourselves “The Five Stars.” We choose a different five-star hotel each time and meet in the lobby.
In a dog-eat-dog industry with typically very shallow relationships, it was sweet to see the easy fellowship they shared when we initially met. They clicked easily because they had so much in common.
It is encouraging to listen to them pray for each other. They are so full of anticipation and relief to find a circle of artistic women who have no ulterior motives in meeting with them. They just want to grow closer to the Lord and to each other, and grow in their skills as artists.
Until this group, they never really felt like they "fit" into fellowship anywhere. These young women are discovering that their faith and art can co-exist. The Five Stars are becoming as passionate about Jesus as they are about theatre.
