I was having lunch with my dear friend, Midori, who had taken over the college ministry that I led when I was in Japan. She asked, "Alice, what will you and Sean be doing as missionaries here?"
In the time I previously spent in Japan, I had my hands in every kind of ministry situation. I did everything - from
teaching English classes and organizing college outreaches to leading worship and women's cell groups. At that stage, ironically, it seemed much easier to define my ministry, because I was doing all the work.
I explained to Midori that our heart is to mentor and equip Japanese young people with the vision to see Japan know Jesus. Instead of being in the spotlight, we want to be in the shadows, as we train and release other Midoris to live out their calling.
Her eyes lit up as she exclaimed, "I think I understand! You guys want to be coaches! A coach's job is to instruct the team in how to play and to encourage them to play well. But, a coach never plays in the game himself. If he plays in the
game, that means one of his players has to sit on the sidelines."
"Yes!" I thought. "That's it!"
