A Day in the Life of an Apprentice: Los Angeles

8:00am Today is Thursday, the morning the team has breakfast together. After an hour of breakfast and fellowship, we gather in the living room for Luke Devotions. This is a part of the apprenticeship – each week we have a section of the book of Luke to prayerfully read and reflect on. This is called “lectio divina,” a type of “holy reading” of the scripture. I really enjoy spending time and entering into a biblical story, instead of the hurried reading I am used to.

10:30am We continue with the neighborhood mapping project that we started when we all arrived. We go to a particular block of our area, and create our own detailed map, marking the non-profits, churches, shops, etc. This helps us become experts in our own neighborhood.

2:00pm I attend a meeting of the CAC, Community Action Council, a neighborhood meeting where I am representing InnerCHANGE

4:00pm Tutoring – Time for Neighborhood tutoring. We really need more tutors!! I want to think about how we can reach more kids by finding more tutor/mentors.

6:00pm I leave for Belmont High School. Tonight I was called to substitute for an adult ESL class from 6:30-9:00. I will walk rather than drive because I have a great parking spot, and if I drive it may be hard to find another spot within several blocks of our apartment.

9:30pm Late dinner and a time to relax and catch up with my house mate.

11:00pm I end my day with the examen – we have learned this in the apprenticeship. Each night before crashing out, I look back at my day, reflecting on how God was present in my day. I also ask when was I least aware of God’s presence in my day. This has helped me be more aware of how God is at work in the city around me.
