We do not create events or programs. We prefer to incarnate and infiltrate into existing systems. For example, we invest into the school all of our kids go to, but at a much deeper level, the local food bank (helping in the storage/receiving facility), several of us coach lacrosse at a high school. Much of our ministry is a very aware presence with people we interact with, looking to serve sacrificially (stop and consider those words), listening for conversations that matter and go deeper, and a presence in our neighborhood that allows us a community to serve the people we relate with through these contexts. One of these is our Trash TV Thursdays, where we have an open door for a casual dinner and then all watch the latest reality TV program and then have dessert, enjoying talking etc. A second gathering context is participating in city wide events. New Orleans is full of free music, social and service opportunities. We go as a community and invite others to join us, many who have no relationship with a church, or God. Summing this up, our ministry is organic, but a community together serving, relating, caring is powerful.
Are you a church?Define church? Biblically, we’d have to answer yes. Institutionally in the American old 20th century model – no. We do not own land, a building, have pews or a church constitution. We will birth a church, but we can promise you if will not look or feel like any church experience you’ve ever had ...if you come out of conventional church backgrounds. We will birth something Biblical, but culturally and contextually submerged into our culture. We with church backgrounds often do not realise how much of what we do is inherited cultural traditions and norms. This church we birth will be separate from the community, though the community will be the guardians of the church’s ethos and operation.
Are you all young and single? No. Some are, others are middle age. Some are single, some are married with kids. It is our goal to forge a community of people who are generationally and ethnically, and hopefully nationality diverse.
What about kids? This is a common and good question. We have younger kids right now and do a different form of worship and Biblical equipping for them. BUT we integrate them into community life in as many aspects as possible, including mission, serving in mercy ministry, etc.
Do you live communally? No and Yes. We live in cluster and have singles living with us. Singles can and do get flats together. More importantly is being in very close proximity. You can’t be in community and live apart from each other. It’s like building community in a mega-church....very, very hard and eats resources to do so. So, in some aspect we do. Our lives are interdependent, which brings in many levels of messy life – we’re people...so, it’s messy.
What do we believe theologically?Funny how often this comes up. We believe in the historical orthodox creedal faith...Biblical Christianity. We purposefully do not state positions on the secondary and tertiary issues. They are not relevant and many great faithful saints have varying positions we can live with on the secondary issues. We refuse to enter into the conversations on issues of polity and preference that some want to make Biblical doctrine: e.g. Is small or big church better. We have preferences, but not doctrinal statements and will not define those. We do ask a question in answering a question though: Is it more important to have all the things we believe figured out or to act, react, initiate, feel, think and live like Jesus? Which is first?
