Inside Urban Mosaic

Cities in North America are incredibly complex. Every day people from all over the world move to cities in North America to pursue a better life than the one they left behind. This presents incredible opportunities for the local church, but it also presents great challenges as well.

Consider these startling facts about Los Angeles County, one of North America’s most densely populated urban regions.

  • Los Angeles Unified School District claims over 100 languages spoken by its students

  • Los Angeles contains over 600 separate faith communities with established religious centers making it the most religiously diverse city in the world

  • The city of Long Beach, Los Angeles County’s second largest city, is actually a city of minorities, with no single ethnic group over 50% of the population and Hispanics being the largest represented group

  • Los Angeles County’s largest evangelical denomination comprises only 1.2 percent of the total population and less than two percent of the religious population of the county. At the same time, there are over 131 Buddhist temples and meditation centers.

This story is not unique. Cities across North America are experiencing these demographic shifts and unique mission challenges, but because of the local church’s inability to adapt to this new ministry environment, the Church in North America has been steadily losing ground.

Is there hope for the future of the church in these bleak times?
The answer is unequivocally YES!!!

Urban Mosaic seeks to come alongside urban pastors and leaders in ways that help them become more effective in addressing this complex ministry environment.
